About

Swords and Scabbards?  What does that have to do with Christianity and politics, you ask?  Well, the name comes from a combination of things.

Coming up with a name that is descriptive, pithy and not already taken is something of a challenge.  After trying multiple names only to find they are taken, I was reminded of a quote I had read recently attributed to Ben Franklin although it didn’t originate with him.  The quote is:

One sword often keeps another in the scabbard – Ben Franklin

So how does that tie in?

First of all, the Bible is often referred to as the Sword of the Spirit and it is the foundation on which my worldview rests.  I am a Christian before I am anything else.  Before being a husband, a father, an American or a libertarian conservative.  I am all of those things but, I am a follower of Christ first.

Secondly, the quote addresses two political issues: one in the macro and one in the micro.

In the macro, the quote references the need for our nation to have a strong defense since the threat of a robust challenge, gives pause to nations that might seek to do us harm.  Our nation must maintain the ability to defend ourselves (which is not to say we need to be saber-rattling or nation building which I am strongly opposed to.)

In the micro, the quote is one of the arguments in support of the 2nd Amendment for which I am strong proponent.  It’s not dissimilar from the saying ‘An armed society is a polite society.’

So you that’s origin of the name.

As far as what you can expect to find here, you will find commentary on theological, political and social issues from a Christian libertarian perspective.   I will say things offensive to some people and as long as it’s consistent biblically and logically, I’m ok with that.  If you think I’m wrong from either perspective and you want to point it out, I’ll be happy to listen and re-consider my position, but make no mistake, I believe in absolute truth and it is embodied in both general revelation (logic) and special revelation (the Bible).
